‘Tread gently for you tread on my dreams’. This quote from William Butler Yeats seems to perfectly encapsulate what I wished to say in this thread. So often in the past, when reading through the websites of other teams who have faced the reality of relegation, I have been surprised by the vitriolic outpourings that have followed that final fateful result. I hope that we can be different. Of course, it is to be expected that there will be frustration, disappointment and even anger. Every supporter will re-imagine each of those important moments and decisions over the past months and think to themselves “if only”. This is the lot of someone who really cares about their football team and I think it is fair to say that we all share this in common. Therefore, before the recriminations and finger-pointing begin please take a moment to reflect on what follows. I don’t expect it to make our fate any easier to accept, nor do I expect it to lessen those emotions still so fresh, however, I hope it might set out why I feel we should go into our match next Saturday and the following season with our heads held high. Also when reflecting on this season all I would ask is that you, the reader, tread gently as you walk upon the dreams of many.
What is a life without dreams but no life at all, and therefore we must make certain that we never stop dreaming. Histon Football Club dared to dream. Like Icarus we spread our wings and sought to scale the highest peaks and cross the widest oceans. Others may have said it was merely folly and that like Icarus flying so close to the sun would only lead to disaster; yet still we tried. For a while the dream was within our grasp, but like so many before us slowly we were forced back to earth. Still, on our return we bring with us many new ideas, experiences and memories – all of which we could never have known unless we had dared to dream in the first place and, more importantly, been brave enough to follow that dream. We return from this first foray to the stars a changed club: with a clearer sense of ourselves, our future direction and a belief that we could one day return. How could anyone think we have failed; how can we not feel proud of these achievements?
And so we reach a new fork in the road in our journey as a club. This journey is neither better nor worse than what went before but merely different. As with any journey there is a sense of loss at what has passed but also the thrill and anticipation of what the future holds. Stretched out ahead are a wealth of possibilities; endless new challenges and any number of possible experiences. It is these experiences that make us what we are and from these we learn, so they should be embraced. Come Saturday a new chapter begins; a fresh journey starts and each of us can begin to dream again. I am in no doubt, that the experiences of the past few seasons shall stand us in good stead for what lays ahead. Therefore rather than dwell on the past, let’s thank those that have proved such boon companions on our travels thus far and extend a friendly hand to anyone who wishes to join us as we start our new adventure.
I can think of no better travelling companions than the staff and supporters of Histon Football Club.
